I’ve been following the spirituality space since the first digital boom in 2016 when Bri Luna came on the scene with The Hoodwitch and Sephora did that embarrassing “Witch Starter Kit” in 2018 that had Twitter up in arms. I was even informed by one of the members in a Skool community I’m in (which I’ll mention later) that American Apparel came under fire in 2013 with a Voodoo-themed window display. Shout out to Elisha Valentine, founder of the Soft Power Studio, for the tea. This was all before white spirituality creators really entered the space on social media and Etsy.
THE SPIRITUALITY LANDSCAPE IS CHANGING
In its prime, the content from Black and brown spiritual content creators was mostly free or low-cost. Now, I’m noticing a trend in 2026. Bri Luna recently announced she won’t be posting on Meta platforms as much and is primarily moving to paid memberships on Patreon. I’m noticing other spiritual content creators are following suit, even if it’s more quietly.
For example, one spirituality influencer I follow used to have a shop feature on their website where you could purchase classes à la carte at a low cost compared to their one-on-one and group sessions, but now, in order for you to access those same classes, you have to pay for a monthly or yearly membership. While this influencer has a free podcast and posts free content on their social media, access to more detailed knowledge is now behind a bigger paywall.
When I mentioned this in the Skool community I’m in called BetterWitch Coaching, Elisha pointed out that it’s great that it’s becoming more normalized for magickal practitioners and holistic practitioners to charge – and I have to agree, especially with everything that comes with it (energy exchanges, product materials, software you need to run a business in general, etc.).
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?
What does this changing landscape mean if you’re just getting into spirituality (or if you’ve finally accepted the spiritual gifts you’ve had all your life) and you’re still not sure where to begin? I mean, the possibilities are endless:
- You can support your favorite online spirituality practitioner by paying for their one-on-one sessions and/or their products
- You can pay for memberships on Patreon and other platforms to learn from your favorite tarot reader, medium, etc. in a group setting.
- You can start researching, studying, and experimenting on your own as a solo practitioner or “baby witch.” (@TheJasmineGarden just posted a great video on Instagram about how to get started as a baby witch today)
- You can do a combination of all three – and may realize you want to start a business of your own in the space.
- You can also decide none of this is for you and call it a day, lol.
There are pros and cons to each option, but the key is to listen to your intuition to see which option is best for you right now.
MY TWO CENTS
I was introduced to an Ifa priestess about a decade ago. However, before I was fully committed and did any spiritual work with her, I was in the books. I read anything related to spirituality that interested me at that time. Once I decided to take Ifa seriously, I continued to read books as I worked with the Ifa priestess and asked her questions on what I read, as well as the work we would do together.
Now that she and I are no longer working together, I’m back to self-studying and allowing my interests and intuition to guide me to what’s next. I’m also in the BetterWitch Coaching Skool community, as I mentioned before. Still, it’s less about teaching me about the Craft and more about how I can potentially turn my interest in wellness and spirituality into a business. It’s a different energy and community.
IF YOU’RE STILL OVERWHELMED, ALLOW ME TO RECOMMEND A PLACE TO START: ASTROLOGY
Now, hear me out…
Astrology is more than just your Big Three (Sun, Moon, and Rising). It is an entire chart that consists of your cosmic makeup. Just like your human design chart, you will need your date of birth, the time you were born, and the place you were born to see your whole chart.
Unlike human design, if you don’t have your birth time, you can put 12:00 pm to see your chart. If you decide to do that and it’s not your actual birth time, just know that some placements in your chart will be incorrect.
You can get your birth chart at Cafe Astrology, Astrodienst or Astro-charts.
If that’s still overwhelming to you, focus on your Sun sign (the sign associated with your birth date).
Thanks to Aly Kravetz, the founder of BetterWitch and the BetterWitch Coaching Skool community, I learned that a man by the name of Ivo Dominguez Jr. did a 12-book series called “Unlock the Magic of Your Sun Sign” breaking down how each zodiac sign can enhance their magical practice and personal development through the power of their Sun sign.
There were various contributors in each book, most of whom are practitioners under that specific Sun Sign. Heads up – if you’re a Leo, Aly is a contributor to the “Leo Witch” book. You can check out Aly and Ivo’s interview here.
If you decide to purchase the physical book, please make your purchase from Aly’s bookshop here. It’s also available on Kindle. If you find a topic that piques your interest, Aly has free and low-cost classes/e-books you can purchase here.
While there is no one way, path, or answer to explore your spiritual gifts, I hope this is a great start for you in this part of your journey.
